Environment

As a society we must balance the creation of goods and services that supply our needs, wants and economic growth with the resulting use or consumption of the earth’s resources. Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. recognizes that mining activity impacts the natural and human environment as well as the economic environment. Responsible mining must involve environmental consideration in all phases of our operation. We conduct our business at Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. responsibly and in a manner designed to protect our employees, public health and the environment in accordance with the principles outlined below.

Management Commitment

Management commits the necessary resources and designates appropriate accountabilities to attain operational performance consistent with this Statement of Environmental Policy and Principles. An evaluation of potential environmental consequences and appropriate treatment of these consequences is integrated into business decision-making at all levels. Quarterly reports are made to Senior Management and to the Board of Directors on environmental activities and operational performance consistent with this policy.

Participation

All employees and contractors are expected to know and follow the Statement of Environmental Policy and Principles. Employees and contractors are given a copy of this statement. Employees are trained in applicable environmental requirements for their jobs. Copies of this statement are posted in key areas of the workplace.

Compliance

We assess, plan, construct, operate and reclaim our site in compliance with all applicable legislation. In the absence of legislation we apply technically proven and economically feasible measures to protect the environment. Employees are expected to comply with all environmental laws and regulations. Employees are trained in the appropriate handling of environmental matters as they relate to specific jobs or responsibilities.

Pollution Prevention

Kirkland Lake Gold operates under a policy of reduce, reuse and recycle. Continual efforts are made to review and reduce consumption, to reuse materials where possible and to recycle in place of disposal.

Continual Improvement

Kirkland Lake Gold periodically evaluates its environmental programs and this statement to strive for continual improvements. We audit our operation for environmental performance on a regular basis. Management sets environmental performance targets and objectives. Progress on accomplishing these targets and objectives is monitored as part of annual performance reviews and compensation evaluations. In addition, we support research directed at expanding scientific knowledge of the industry’s impact on the environment and improved treatment, prevention and management technologies.

Public Policy

Kirkland Lake Gold works with the governments and public to develop sound, workable legislation that promotes the best balance between utilization of our natural resources and the protection of the environment. We strive to enhance communications and understanding with governments, employees and the public. Our employees actively participate in community projects and as appropriate, we also make our equipment and facilities available.

Our support for the protection of the environment requires us to strive towards a performance record that places us as a leader in our industry.
